Last Tuesday (April 22, 2008) the Colorado legislature voted on a bill that would have eliminated approximately 4.9 million dollars from Colorado Charter Schools. Although the bill was written in language that attempted to disguise the attack on educational choice, the minority republicans recognized the clever scheme to gain control over charter school funding and battled against it.
The fight was led by Assistant Minority Leader, Rep. David Balmer who represents constituents of one of the most successful charter school programs in the state. “Cherry Creek Academy will lose significant funding next year if this bill passes. I can’t let that happen. It’s my responsibility to protect school choice.” said Balmer of Centennial.
All 25 Republicans and several Democrats in the Colorado State House of Representatives voted to amend the School Finance Act in order to restore over $4.9 million in funding to charter schools across the state.
Despite the powerful efforts of anti-school choice groups, the most conscientious legislators fought, debated and ultimately voted to support the continued success of charter schools in the State of Colorado, thus honoring the wishes of many parents to have a choice in their child’s education. You would think, of all school reforms, charter schools would be the least controversial. And still, the unions dump tons of money into shutting them down. It’s appalling.
